Helsinki, Finland's capital since 1812, is located on a peninsular fringed by many islands. Also known as the Daughter of the Baltic, it is a refreshing, modern and lively city with half a million inhabitants.
Helsinki has an excellent public transport system, but don't be content to admire the sights from a moving tram or bus, for this is a city for pedestrians as everything is close at hand. Take a stroll down the elegant Esplanade to the colourful Market Square from where you can see the golden domes of the Orthodox Uspensky Cathedral, which gives Helsinki a distinctly eastern flavour. Incontrast, Senate Square is dominated by the imposing Lutheran Cathedral, which reflects the neo-classical designs of the 19th Century. Temppeliaukio, known as the extraordinary "Church in the Rock" is also worth a visit.
Summertime in Helsinki brings an enjoyment of being outdoors and close to nature. A popular cycling and walking path follows the southern coastline along the fringe of the lovely Kaivopuisto Park. Dotted along the way are caf?s, ice-cream kiosks, places to rent canoes and many boats to admire. There are also many good restaurants, caf?s and bars between the Senate and Market Squares whose terraces are bustling with people enjoying the long summer evenings.
